Amouage Material launched in 2021, created by perfumer Cécile Zarokian for Amouage, the genuine Omani luxury house founded in 1983, credited with redefining the Arabian art of perfumery on a global stage. Material is built at a genuinely high 25 percent oil concentration, aged for 14 weeks in total, 11 weeks of maceration followed by 3 weeks of maturation.

Amouage frames the fragrance itself as a genuine paradox, using materiality to evoke immateriality, encouraging the wearer to look beyond appearances and recognise that what matters most is often what can’t be seen, likened to standing in a grove and noticing countless textures and hues of wood, leaf and bark all coming together as one.

Fragrance Profile

Amouage Material opens with elemi oil and patchouli oil, resinous and slightly spicy, a warm, textured first impression rather than a bright, conventional opening.

As it develops, the heart brings in Madagascar vanilla absolute and benzoin resinoid. The perfumer herself describes this vanilla as having a genuine dual personality here, both comforting and leathery, animalic, constantly shifting between innocence and wildness rather than settling into simple sweetness.

The base is genuinely elaborate, settling into guaiac wood oil, oud oil, osmanthus, frankincense, labdanum and tonka bean, closing out what the perfumer describes as a dark forest of countless woods, where individual shapes and colours blur into one another.
